Air-Source Heat Pumps for Hot Tubs!

Are you tired of constantly refilling your hot tub with cold water, only to have it take forever to reach the desired temperature? Do you want to save on energy costs while still being able to enjoy a warm soak in your hot tub? An air source heat pump may be the solution you're looking for.

At Elite Hot Tub & Swimming Pool Maintenance, we specialise in full-service hot tub, spa, and swimming pool maintenance and installation. Recently, we had the opportunity to install an air source heat pump for a hot tub in a holiday property in Cumbria.

The customer was experiencing frustration with the hot tub never reaching the desired temperature, especially for short-term guests, due to only having a cold water feed. They were also looking to find a more efficient and cost-effective way to heat the hot tub. That's where we came in.

We recommend the best long-term option for hot tub heating is to install an air-source heat pump. Previously, we thought a dedicated circulation pump was required, but we've since found that you can also use a two-speed pump as long as the run from the pump to the tub is kept as short as possible and the heat pump and tub are on the same level. Special thanks to Guy and Damien at the Hot Tub Superstore for their assistance and advice on this.

To ensure optimal efficiency, the heat pump must be properly sized for the hot tub based on its water capacity, flow rate, and local average temperatures. For this particular hot tub, we chose the Balboa Clim8zone Air Source heat pump.

The Balboa Clim8zone Air Source heat pump is a high-performance and energy-efficient solution for hot tub heating. Some key features and stats of this heat pump include:

  • Capable of operating in temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius.

  • Minimum coefficient of performance (COP) of 5, meaning it can produce 5 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity used.

  • Maximum COP of 15, meaning it can produce 15 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity used.

  • Highest efficiency when the ambient air temperature is higher.

  • Quiet operation with a decibel rating of 55-58 dB(A).

  • Compact size with dimensions of 29.5 inches (L) x 15.75 inches (W) x 17.75 inches (H).

  • Easy installation with a single-phase power supply and a standard 110/220-240V outlet.

Overall, the Balboa Clim8zone Air Source heat pump is a reliable and cost-effective choice for hot tub heating, providing reliable performance even in cold temperatures.

The plumbing for this project was straight forward, and as always, we installed a bypass with ball valves to control the flow.
