Amazing Swimming Pool Transformation!
At Elite Hot Tub & Swimming Pool Maintenance, we pride ourselves on transforming and maintaining luxurious wet leisure facilities across the north of England and Scotland. In this case study, we’re excited to share a recent project where we took on a full swimming pool transformation for a private residence in the picturesque Cumbrian Lake District. The project was challenging yet immensely rewarding, and we’re thrilled with the results.
Project Background
The pool in question had been out of action for approximately eight months. The problems began when a storm caused the pool water to turn green, rendering the sanitiser ineffective. Compounding the issue, the pointing material between the flagstones surrounding the pool was leaching into the water, further deteriorating its condition. The sand, which had been brushed inappropriately as pointing material, contributed to this issue. Additionally, the cover and reel were damaged, allowing leaves and debris to accumulate in the pool.
Challenges Faced
The primary challenges of this project included:
Water Contamination: The pool water was heavily contaminated, requiring intensive chemical treatment to restore clarity and sanitation.
Faulty Pointing Material: The existing pointing material needed to be completely removed and replaced with a more suitable and durable option.
Damaged Pool Cover and Roller: These needed replacement to prevent future debris accumulation and maintain the pool’s cleanliness.
Deep Cleaning Requirements: The flagstones required a thorough cleaning to restore their original appearance.
Our Approach
Chemical Treatment of the Water:
We began by administering a high dosage of shock chlorine to sanitise the bacteria proliferating in the water. A flocculant treatment was then added to clump the organic matter together, making it easier to vacuum later.
Removing and Replacing the Pointing Material:
The sand used as pointing material was loosened using a pressure washer and then meticulously scraped out by hand. Given the irregular layout of the flagstones, this task was particularly time-consuming.
Installing New Pool Cover and Roller:
We replaced the damaged pool cover and roller to ensure the pool remained protected from future debris.
Cleaning the Flagstones:
After removing the old pointing material, we pressure washed the flagstones to prepare them for the new epoxy grout, chosen for its strength and water resistance.
Step-by-Step Transformation
Day 1: High dosage shock chlorine and flocculant were added to the pool. The old sand pointing was removed using a pressure washer and manual scraping. The initial change in water clarity and the impact of the pressure washing on the flagstones were immediately noticeable.
Day 2: A second round of shock chlorine, flocculant, and clarifier was administered. The new pool roller was installed, and the flagstones received another pressure wash. The epoxy grout was applied, first brushing the bulk of the material and then finishing by hand.
Day 3: The sand filter media was changed to ensure optimal filtration of the pool water. Unfortunately, adverse weather conditions prevented us from capturing footage of this process.
Final Check: After a few days, we returned to find the pool sparkling clear. The water had responded excellently to the treatments, and a final vacuuming of the pool floor completed the transformation.
Outcome
The project was a resounding success. The pool water was crystal clear, and the surrounding flagstones looked rejuvenated with the new epoxy grout. The installation of the new cover and roller ensures the pool will remain clean and protected. Our team was delighted with the transformation, and the homeowners were thrilled with their revitalised pool area.
