Reviving a Cracked Liner Pool in the Cumbrian Lake District
Swimming pools offer a refreshing escape from the everyday hustle and bustle, but what happens when your pool is in dire need of some TLC? That's exactly the scenario we faced during the summer of 2023 when Elite Hot Tub & Swimming Pool Maintenance took on the task of recommissioning an outdoor liner swimming pool in the picturesque Cumbrian Lake District, near Arnside. In this blog post, we'll take you through the incredible journey of restoring a pool that had seen better days.
The Challenge: A Cracked Pool Wall
This particular pool had been installed a little over a decade ago, but it was far from its former glory. The main issue was a cracked pool wall that had sunk into the foundation. To make things more challenging, the pool walls were imported from overseas, and replacing the panel wasn't a viable option. We choose that repairing the pool wall would be the best option, along with a full service of the liner, new filter media, refill and chemical rebalance.
Step 1: Draining the Pool
The first step was to empty the pool of its stagnant water, which had become a haven for frogs and newts. This proved to be a time-consuming task as the water had collected a significant amount of debris, often clogging up our submersible pumps. We had to resort to wet vacuums to clear the final few inches from the pool floor, allowing us to initiate the repair process.
Step 2: Preparation Work
To access the outer structure of the pool, we had to remove overhanging branches from a nearby tree and take apart the decking boards. With that done, we could focus on bracing the cracked wall. The aim was to make sure both sides of the panel were flush with the others. This was achieved by cutting a new supporting joist from sturdy timber and securing both sides of the panel to it and into the concrete posts.
Step 3: Repairing the Pool Wall
The real challenge lay in repairing the cracked pool wall. We began by bracing it to ensure it was flush with the surrounding panels and then applied expanding foam to seal the gap. A robust sealant was added to reinforce the repair. On the opposite side, we created a brace capable of withstanding the water pressure.
Step 4: Additional Maintenance
While working on the pool wall, we also addressed other maintenance tasks. This included fixing a small puncture in the liner and changing the sand in the pool filter.
Step 5: Support Structure & Cleaning
To ensure the repaired pool wall could withstand the pressure from the water, we created a support structure. Following this, we initiated a thorough cleaning process. This involved coating the liner with a potent chemical solution to eliminate dirt and algae. After much scrubbing and pressure washing, the pool was ready for its transformation.
The Final Result: A Stunning Transformation
After all the hard work and meticulous attention to detail, the result was nothing short of spectacular. The once murky and damaged pool had been completely revitalized into a sparkling clear oasis. It was ready to be enjoyed throughout the summer, and our delighted customer couldn't have been happier.
